Animation is the art of combining a series of different images that create the appearance of movement when played in rapid succession over time. The history of animation in the film goes as far back as the 19th century with the work of French cartoonist Emile Cohl, often referred to as the father of animation. His groundbreaking invention of making animated films by tracing one picture onto a lighted glass plate and then tracing the next drawing over it, reflecting the differences needed to portray fast movement attributes to his title. Through this process, Fantasmagorie was the first complete animated film made in 1908.
With the precedent set by Emile Cohl, in 1914, filmmaker Winsor Clay went on to develop the first animation involving character development and live-action called Gertie the Dinosaur. As the years gradually went by, animation became perfected and realistic. The birth of Walt Disney in 1923 saw animation go to higher grounds with the making of Snow White and the seven dwarfs. It was the first-ever animation to feature full color and clear sound.
